Shorter time to testing and faster swept-wavelength tests help reduce test cost per device, improve test margins and lower the cost of ownership.
With more than +12 dBm output power at the product family’s lowest spontaneous emission level, the N7776C enables the validation of extremely deep filters. It also offers the best wavelength accuracy – enabled by its high-resolution wavelength reference unit that provides real-time tracking and control and includes a gas cell for excellent long-term stability and self-adjustment capability.
Like its predecessors 81600B and 81606A, the new N7776C tunable laser source is supported by the photonic application suite software for spectral measurements of insertion loss, polarization dependent loss and dispersion. In combination with the N774xC multiport power meters and the N7786C polarization synthesizer, the new lasers provide optimal swept-wavelength accuracy and excellent dynamic range for measuring both filter stop bands and pass bands.
All N777xC tunable lasers are based on a common cavity and laser module design and share a narrow linewidth, excellent long-term stability and low spontaneous emission level. They are software compatible with the 8160xA and 81600B lasers, the industry standards for more than a decade, but occupy 1 height unit less rack space. The remote user interface on the instrument is accessible with just a web browser, either via LAN or via USB connection. An optional touch-screen display provides local operator access and displays current operating parameters.

Keysight N7784B User Manual
022 | ANGLED CONTACT CONNECTORS |
- Comprehensive Polarization Control and Management Capabilities
- Covers S-, C- and L-Band plus 1.3μm Window (O-Band)
- Up to 100K SOPs/s
- SOP Switching time less than 10us
The Keysight N7784B Polarization Controller contains a high-speed polarization controller plus microcontroller based driving circuitry. This unit can operate in various modes:
As Polarization Stabilizer it provides a stable output State of Polarization (SOP) even with fluctuations and drifts of the input SOP as occurring for example through temperature drift and mechanical settling processes. The stabilized output signal is guided in a Polarization Maintaining Fiber (PMF). Alternatively an external electrical feedback signal can be provided for stabilizing the SOP.
As Synchronous Scrambler the device switches the SOP of the output signal in a (pseudo) random way. Switching of the SOP occurs within few microseconds. The SOP is stable for a predefined time until it again switches to a new SOP. An electrical trigger input can be used to synchronize the scrambler with external events.
As SOP Switch the Keysight N7784B switches to a set of SOPs with high repeatability which allows customized implementations of the Mueller Matrix method for PDL characterization of components.
As traditional Scrambler the Keysight N7784B varies the output SOP smoothly in a random/pseudo random way.
The unit does not contain any moving parts and therefore is robust and withstands even rough environmental conditions. All abovementioned applications of the N7784B are supported by a PC software package.

Keysight N7786C User Manual
001 | POLARIZATION SYNTHESIZER, 1240 NM TO 1650 NM |
022 |
- Comprehensive polarization stabilization/control
- Fast switching capability
- Enables single-sweep spectral PDL measurements with photonic application software suite
- 1240 nm to 1650 nm operating wavelength range
- Robust, no moving optical part
The Keysight Technologies N7786C contains a high-speed lithium-niobate based polarization controller and a polarization analyzer that monitors the output signal and provides feedback to the controller. This unit can operate in several modes:
- As a polarization stabilizer, it provides a stable output state of polarization (SOP) even with fluctuations and drifts of the input SOP. The stabilized output signal is guided in a standard single-mode fiber (SMF). The output SOP can be defined in the following ways:
- When the set-and-forget switch in the user interface is activated, the current SOP is stored and maintained, even if polarization changes occur on the instrument input.
- Defined Stokes: the target output SOP can be defined by the user using the Stokes parameters, which are then set using the polarization analyzer feedback,
- Defined sequence: the device switches the SOP of the output signal in a chosen pattern with a cycling speed of up to 100 kSOPs/s. - As an SOP switch, the N7786C cycles through a sequence of SOPs at a chosen rate up to more than 40 kHz. The internal settings for the SOP sequence are first determined with the stabilizer function for rapid direct switching. SOP switching occurs within a few microseconds. An electrical trigger input can be used to synchronize the scrambler with external events.
- As a traditional scrambler, the N7786C varies the output SOP in a random way. Full coverage of the Poincaré Sphere can be achieved within a few milliseconds.
- As a polarization analyzer, the instrument provides truly high-speed capabilities: Up to 1 M samples can be taken with a sample rate of up to 1 M samples per second.
- As fast-switching polarization controller for single-sweep wavelength dependent PDL measurements in combination with the photonics application software suite (PAS).
Many applications of the N7786C are supported by the built-in user interface. Programming uses a new SCPI command set and the instrument is addressed as a VISA resource.
The instrument comes in a compact form factor of just one rack unit height, with LAN and USB interfaces.
